12 March 2008 2008 Season Prospects
With the seed and fertiliser delivered and the seed drills ready to go, the growers of Ross-shire, Sutherland, Inverness-shire and Morayshire are well prepared for another campaign. The area to be sown with spring barley seems to be up in the Highlands by around 6%, with even greater increases in other parts of Scotland. It is clear that there is more confidence in the arable sector as global markets continue to push values up. The forward contracts for malting barley for the distilling industry look attractive but growers are a little wary in case a weather problem creates another bull market, whilst there are also fears that a major fall on the wheat market could have a negative effect on values. Overall, however, it would appear that growers have an opportunity to get a reasonable deal now, if they want it, and that consumers will have more available but perhaps not much more than they need. An interesting season awaits, yet again.
