4 March 2008 Further Energy Savings in the Cards at Highland Grain
In a continuing drive to reduce energy costs and to reduce the use of fossil fuels, Highland Grain is investing in a Combined Heat and Power plant, which will be fully operational for the 2008 harvest. A trial in 2007, before all of the necessary equipment was fully operational, showed that additional fuel savings of 15% were achieved, against the 2005 baseline. This means that, along with the heat recovery investment in 2006, total fuel savings of 50% or more should be achievable in 2008. the CHP plant is designed to supply all of the electricity required on site, although it will cost slightly more to generate than bought-in power. The savings in fuel, however, will mean a very short payback for the overall investment. The business is intent on continuing its drive towards energy savings and away from fossil fuels, so remains on the lookout for opportunities.
