28 February 2008 Cool Wet Summer Still Produces a Good Crop in 2007

As befits the variable climate in the North of Scotland, the 2007 harvest produced another unique crop.  A cool, wet, difficult Summer season produced a surprisingly good crop with reasonably low Nitrogen and low to moderate screenings; exceptionally good weather at establishment no doubt saved the crop, to a large extent.  Germination was not a problem but thousand corn weights were back 10% or so on 2006, although that year produced exceptionally high TCWs.  The main problem with the crop was that it did not mature properly due to the wet season and harvest was very late for some.  Highland Grain started uplift on 17 August and finished on 18 October and handled its highest ever tonnage, despite yields being only moderate to good.  Highland Grain accepted 99.9% of all product offered, which is a testament to the systems in place for ensuring that all malting barley is analysed before uplift, and at intake, to make sure that no extra costs are incurred by the grower.  Average Nitrogen for Optic was 1.50%, slightly up on the 5 and 10 year average of 1.49%, whilst 92.8% was retained, on average, on the 2.5mm screen.  Oxbridge, the other main variety, averaged 1.52% Nitrogen with 94.9% being retained on the 2.5mm screen.

Prices have been the best ever for Highland Grain but, after many years of low prices, they were needed and members have done well.
